Did you know that slushy vanilla ice-cream eaten out of a plastic bag could thrill children? Or perhaps it was the chocolate and butterscotch syrup I bought to go with it? Or maybe the rainbow sprinkles on top? Or the excitement of comparing your ice-cream experiment with your classmates?
Something to do outside on a cold winter day. Shake, shake, shake!
Here is the recipe:
In a small sandwich bag
· ½ cup half & half
· 1 teaspoon vanilla
· 1 tablespoon sugar
In a large gallon bag
· 2 cups ice
· ½ cup salt
Put the first 3 ingredients in the small bag, zip the small bag, place in the large bag. Place the ice and salt in the large bag (sitting around the small sandwich bag). Shake for 5 minutes. Add toppings.
Students all asked for more and insisted that I email the recipe to their parents. I still don't know if anyone really ever made this type of ice-cream again. Sometimes exhilarating moments sparkle best when left as a memory on a cold winter day.
What a fun science experiment! I always wondered about doing this but had visions of baggies accidentally opening mid shake and the contents going askew . . . Heidi C (Wordsmithping blog)
The STEM teacher I subbed for had just done this as a pre-Spring Break motivator. How fun! I love having the actual recipe. The students were...vague. "Shake, shake, shake." This will be fun.
