This is not a delicious post about chocolate. My students are choosing one of three fairy tale structures to use and adapt as their own. I warn them about changing too many things in the original because even fairy tale life can get complicated.
One child wrote about three lemmings living on an island. The vague structure of his story is based on The Three Billy Goats Gruff. Half the island is made of Nutella. The other half is dirt. The lemmings have to cross a wall guarded by guards and if they make it across, King Nutella will eat them. This is what I have figured out after five minutes of conferring. I'm not sure how lemmings live on dirt to begin with. What is on his paper is fuzzier.
I feel as though I'm deciphering a convoluted dream. It's Friday. Please just write about a goat and a troll.
”just write about a goat and a troll”, I know that feeling well.
This sounds like one of the many moments in talking with a child that you just have to accept what they’re saying and roll with it, ha! An island half made of Nutella? Lemmings living on the dirt? You know what, kid… sure. Why not.
Lemmings on an island made of Nutella! The creativity is astounding.
